One retailer lists its purple, gold and red raw bags as the same species, Chondrus crispus, and says color depends on pigments and growing conditions. It says it does not claim purple is better than gold. We found no independent source showing any color is more nutritious, so choose on price, origin and how much the seller tells you.
Raw sea moss is sold in gold, red and purple, usually at slightly different prices and with confident claims about which is best. The seller we reviewed lists all three as the same seaweed and says it does not claim any color is better. This guide lays out the three bags side by side, explains what the retailer and the research say about color, and points to the details that matter more than the shade.
The three raw bags side by side
All three are 4 oz bags of whole dried sea moss from Alkaline Herb Shop, our affiliate retailer. Prices and origins below are what the listings showed on November 3, 2026. Prices change, and the retailer says the country of origin is printed on every bag.
| Bag | Price and origin | What the listing says |
|---|---|---|
| Red, 4 oz | $28.99. Harvested in Canada, per the listing. About $14.50 a batch. | Red sits in the middle of the color range. Same species as gold and purple. |
| Purple and gold, 4 oz | $29.99. Harvested in Canada, per the listing. About $15.00 a batch. | A mix of purple and gold fronds, not sorted to one shade. |
| Gold, 4 oz | $33.99. Harvested in Ireland, per the listing. About $17.00 a batch. | The palest and most familiar shade. Same species as red and purple. |
The batch figure uses the retailer's own method of 2 oz of raw moss per batch, so each bag makes two. It is simple arithmetic on the listed price, not a cost per serving. The listings do not define a gel serving, which is why we do not give one. Our gel guide has the full method.
All three listings describe the same product apart from color and origin: dried for 3 to 7 days, no preservatives or additives, and one ingredient in the bag.
What the retailer says about color
The retailer's listings say sea moss ranges in color from pale gold through red to deep purple, and that the shade comes from pigments the plant makes in response to light and water conditions. They name the species for all three bags as Chondrus crispus and say the difference between the colors is simply the color and where the moss grew.
The purple listing asks the obvious question itself: is purple better than gold? The retailer's answer is that it does not claim so, that the bags are the same species prepared the same way, and that you should choose on preference. We think that is the right reading of the evidence, and we say why below.
One practical point on origin. The retailer says its raw range is sourced from Maine, Canada, Ireland, Northern France and Chile depending on the season. The listings name a country for the bag, but check the country printed on the bag you receive, because a seasonal source can change.
What independent sources say
We did not find a source showing that any color of Chondrus crispus is more nutritious or safer than another. That absence is worth knowing, because marketing for sea moss often attaches nutrient claims to a color.
- Color has a biological explanation. A 2024 study in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface of Chondrus crispus gametophytes found that blue structural coloration works together with the seaweed's other pigments to manage how it handles light. So color in this seaweed has a biological explanation tied to light. The study does not connect those findings to the gold, red or purple shades of a dried bag, so we do not read nutrition into them.
- The species matters more than the shade. "Sea moss" is a common name for red seaweeds, and Irish sea moss usually means Chondrus crispus. NIH's LactMed describes sea moss as containing carrageenan, other carbohydrates and minerals including iodine, notes possible heavy metal contamination, and says no medicinal value has been proven. See what is sea moss for the species and the research.
- Iodine varies far more than color does. NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements says iodine in commercially available whole or sheet seaweeds ranges from 16 to 2,984 micrograms per gram. The raw listings we reviewed do not state iodine per gram for any color. Our iodine guide explains why that matters.
How to choose between them
- Find the Latin name. All three listings say Chondrus crispus. A listing that says only "sea moss" tells you less.
- Read the origin on the bag. It can differ from the listing if the seller's source changed.
- Look for a single ingredient. A raw bag should contain only dried seaweed.
- Treat "wildcrafted" as the seller's claim. The retailer says its raw moss is wildcrafted from natural sea beds and not pool grown. We have not verified harvest methods.
- Ask for a lab report that matches your lot. None of the three listings makes a testing claim for the bag itself. The site footer links to a general third-party testing page, which is not a lot-specific report. See how to read a lab report.
- Choose on price, origin and preference. That is what the seller itself advises, and nothing we found says otherwise.
If you have a thyroid condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take medication, read our sea moss side effects guide and ask a clinician first. All three listings say sea moss is naturally high in iodine, that people with a thyroid condition should speak to a physician first, and that the product is not for use during pregnancy or nursing.

Frequently asked questions
Is purple sea moss better than gold sea moss?
The retailer we reviewed says it does not claim so, and that the bags are the same species prepared the same way. We found no independent source showing that one color is more nutritious. Source: retailer purple and gold listing.
Are purple, gold and red sea moss the same species?
The retailer lists all three as Chondrus crispus and says color depends on pigments the plant makes in response to light and water conditions. Check the Latin name on any bag, because "sea moss" is a common name for red seaweeds. Sources: retailer listing and NIH LactMed.
Does sea moss color change the iodine?
We did not find a source comparing iodine by color. NIH says iodine in commercially available whole or sheet seaweeds ranges from 16 to 2,984 micrograms per gram, and the raw listings we reviewed do not state iodine per gram. Source: NIH ODS.
Where does the retailer's raw sea moss come from?
The retailer says it buys from Maine, Canada, Ireland, Northern France and Chile depending on the season, that each listing names a country for the bag, and that the country is printed on every bag. Source: retailer listing.
